I purchased tickets for Midsummer Magic at the Lido as soon as they came out. The year Covid hit, their previous event had to be cancelled, so it’s lovely to see this going ahead in 2022.

We were promised an evening of champagne, canapes and entertainment and that’s what we certainly got! Black tie and evening dresses were the attire for the evening. We arrived promptly at 7.15pm and were rewarded with a bubbly glass to enjoy. We had some lovely canapes floating around that we could nibble on to keep hunger at bay. Friends of the Lido were there to sell us raffle tickets adding to the raised funds already towards the Lido and the Rotary Club charities. (You can also become a ‘friend of the lido’ with a yearly subscription of £10 which helps towards that too) Forming the ‘Friends’ is something many of the group had thought about for several years; as enthusiastic, even fanatical, users of this historic facility, they feel privileged to have such a gem in the midst of our City. They, therefore, aim to do all they can to ensure the pool, its grounds and facilities are nurtured, developed and utilised – not only for them but for future generations. Their intention is, therefore, to work with Vivacity Management to exchange views and support their work.

We were entertained with music being played by the swing band seated and stood behind the clock tower overlooking everyone. We had speeches from Peterborough Ltd, the Rotary Club & Cllr Steve Allen. Then we were invited to move to the far end or the pool for a sneak performance of Romeo & Juliet from Mask Theatre….Juliet had just woken up and ventured out on the balcony all sleepy-eyed and checking her makeup in her lounge suit. Romeo walked below professing his adoration of her. Great local talent that we have from Peterborough’s Mask theatre including Becky from Lamphouse Theatre as Romeo.  (Tickets available for the full outdoor performance 6th-9th July at Nene Park)

We moved back to seats for our second performance of Tales of the Riverbank from Young Technicians Academy with Ratty and Mole taking a boat ride along the river (pool) and going for a picnic with Badger…. They created this one scene specifically for the event tonight but it was so good I think they should do a whole show!!! Especially with the inclusion of a boat (dingy) on the River (swimming pool) well done guys. I’d like to see more from them.

It was also lovely to meet our new Mayor (The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Peterborough) ‘Mr Mayor’ for me phew couldn’t remember all that! … Alan Dowson and have a great chat with him about Peterborough and life in it. Councillors Steve Allen and Jackie Allen, ex Mayor John Peach, ex CEO of Council Gillian Beasley OBE attended along with Kit from Peterborough Ltd who I spoke to about organising future events to come to at the Lido.

A lovely summer evening do, which I’ll gladly attend again as the funds go to good use.
