Stopped off for a lunch in the centre on Friday and decided to go into the Bull Bar on Westgate.

It’s a far cry from how this bar used to be after having quite a lot of money spent on a refurbishment. You walk into a dark saturation of flamboyant greens, blues and golds giving the whole area has a warm cosy feel which is very welcoming.

There’s a choice of both high and low seating as well as booths so it feels quite private. You can pick the cellar booth if there is a group of you, or sit in the bar area where there are various other tables. We sat near a window next to a ceiling-touching olive tree decorated with fairy lights, the wow feature of the room.

I was tempted by their list of cocktails and sipped on their ‘English Garden’ made up of Gin, elderflower liqueur and apple juice. It was sweet but refreshing.

We fancied something light-ish for lunch so our selection was the soup of the day (vegetable) thick and creamy served with a roll & butter, followed by a set of egg & mayo sandwiches which were plentiful with a large salad, coleslaw and tortilla chips. I opted for a smoked bbq pulled pork ciabatta roll which was deliciously hot with melted cheese, it came with a small pot of French fries, red coleslaw and a large salad and followed with what I thought would be a small crème brûlée. Little was I to know how big it was going to be… it was silkily delicious but I couldn’t finish it all off lol. To end was a nice frothy cappuccino.

The meal service was excellent and the food didn’t take long considering it was busy. Ample time if you’re on a lunch break like us. (Arrived at 1pm finished at 2pm).
The price isn’t bad either: soup £6, sandwiches £7.50, ciabatta £11.50 and crème brûlée £8. Next time I think I’ll try their melted Brie and sweet chilli sauce ciabatta or…. their battered cod fillet and chips as I saw that floated by on a tray… it looked scrummy!

It’s not pompous as you’d expect a hotel, it’s a quiet, chill out place to go and eat and much much nicer than before. It’s suitable for all ages, I’d even recommend it for a great place for a roast dinner with your gran! (Served every day!)
