Live singing from Hayley Di Rito added to the ambience today as I sat down to the launch of an Afternoon Tea at Bijou Cocktail Bar & Cafe Peterborough.
The new owners and management team have certainly added some lovely new things both to their menu, which now includes kids) and the events on offer.
All presented beautifully under a blossom sky and served on a wooden slab this afternoon tea is built individually so there’s no waste. It certainly looks great. Unlimited tea and coffee is served, however you can choose cappuccino, like me. ☕️
My choice of sandwiches were granary, which were well-filled, four triangles in total, and a small pot of s&v crisps on the side as my treat number 1. (Shhh yes ‘in’) 😉
A lovely small scone with – jam then cream and cream then jam? Does it really make a difference? For me it’s easier to spread jam on top of cream, but when you bite into the one with jam on top you get more sweetness from the jam. I suppose it will always be a personal choice rather than a right or wrong! What do you think?
Treats 2 & 3…You think of chocolate cake and think heavy, but this is a light sponge with a creamy sweet buttercream. The red velvet was more dense, although the icing topping was to die for… my favourite? Chocolate every time!
Don’t be fooled by ‘pieces of cake’….these are not dainty slices but slabs, the question is, did I finish it all? The waistband said No!! I had to take the cake home. 🤣 (which is an option 📦)
My husband sat proudly eyeing his own ‘savoury’ selection which included a rustic sausage roll, a half of a small pork pie and some warm southern fried chicken goujons. He also switched the jam and cream for butter on his scone.
In fact at home he can’t stop talking about it, “that’s a great man’s afternoon tea, one of the best, really good”, “errr can I say that?!?” (Please don’t get offended, I know what he means. 😂 whatever your preference: sausage roll or salted caramel brownie, cheese & crackers or carrot cake, this tea is as individual as you are)
After booking in advance you are sent a selection menu where you build your Afternoon Tea from a large menu of sandwich filling choices, delicious sweet cakes, the traditional scone and savouries like halloumi fries, cheese & crackers, sausage roll, olives and pork pie, with unlimited soft drinks, tea and coffee included, there are optional alcohol upgrades, plus no-secco, hand-crafted mocktails and zero-alcohol beers. Phew such a lot to choose from.
It’s got a 10/10 from me and him. 👌
