I’ve not eaten in a Chinese restaurant for years, it’s so simple to just get a takeaway, but there’s something nice about out getting dressed up and going out to eat, so we gave the newly opened Fire & Wok a try on Cowgate.
It opened last weekend so it’s had a chance to settle after the mad rush they have had. The owner, Basanta, has a mass of experience of running places to eat behind him: eateries in the USA, Burger King, World Buffet 2020 and of course when he purchased the building on Cowgate (he did want to open immediately but instead there was red tape to get round). He opened the sandwich shop as a stop gap, but got here eventually…. His wife, Sangeeta, does a grand job as Chef in the kitchen and she’s been trained up by original Chinese Chefs.
We chose to eat early on Friday so there was no rush and dived straight in to a 3-course shared set menu.
“Gloriously stuffed” describes our experience. A large plate of starters included sesame prawn toast, satay chicken skewers, deliciously sticky Peking ribs, smoked shredded chicken (wonderful taste), prawn crackers and not forgetting crunchy seaweed. You could eat this on its own for light meal as it’s lovely and filling. None of it was greasy, just good tasting food.
Up next was my favourite; duck pancakes and hoi sin sauce, an ample amount as a second course. Then followed…prawn in satay sauce (very moreish), stir fry mixed vegetables, chicken with black bean symphony (gorgeous) and we swapped rice for noodles. A set of four small plates, but definitely enough after a first and second course. I had a pink gin & lemonade too.
The location is in the city centre; so park in Queensgate and it’s not far to walk or park behind the museum. I managed to grab a parking spot on Cowgate (lucky me), although I think Queensgate is cheaper.
It’s nice and light inside, with pink blossom tree wall decor, panelling and leaf design chairs. Seating is purely downstairs (the spiral staircase has gone) and it looks roomier with the new layout and colours. All dishes were superb and I wouldn’t hesitate to come back for more with friends. I’d recommend you book. www.fireandwok.co.uk
