We stopped off for a lunch in the centre on Friday and decided to go into the Bull Bar Peterborough located on Westgate, part of The Bull Hotel.
It’s a far cry from how this bar used to be after having an obscene amount of money spent on a refurbishment. You walk into a dark saturation of flamboyant greens, blues and golds giving the whole area has a warm cosy feel which is very welcoming…..read on to find out more.
There’s a choice of both high and low seating in the restaurant’s main room, as well as booths. It feels quite private, and can be if you want a private function as it can be closed off for your event. You can pick the cellar booth if there is a group of you, or sit in the bar area where there are various other tables. We sat near a window next to a ceiling-touching olive tree decorated with fairy lights, the wow feature of the room.
I was tempted by The Bull Bar’s new list of cocktails so sipped on their ‘English Garden’ : made up of Gin, elderflower liqueur and apple juice. It was sweet but refreshing, aah, lovely.
We both fancied something light-ish for lunch, so our selection was the Soup of the day (vegetable) thick and creamy served with a roll & butter, followed by a set of Egg & Mayo sandwiches – plentiful being served with a large salad, coleslaw and tortilla chips. I opted for a Smoked bbq pulled pork ciabatta roll which was deliciously hot with gorgeous melted cheese, it came with a small pot of French fries, red coleslaw and a large salad. Was there room for more? Yes just a tiny bit… I followed my main with what I thought would be a small crème brûlée. Little was I to know how big it was going to be… it was silkily delicious but I couldn’t finish it all off lol. To end was a nice frothy cappuccino.
The meal service in the Bull Bar was excellent and the food didn’t take long considering it was a busy lunchtime. Ample time if you’re on a lunch break like us. (Arrived at 1pm finished at 2pm).
The price isn’t bad either: soup £6, sandwiches £7.50, ciabatta £11.50 and crème brûlée £8. Next time I think I’ll try their melted Brie and sweet chilli sauce ciabatta or…. their battered cod fillet and chips as I saw that floated by on a tray… it looked scrummy!
It’s not as pompous as you might expect of a traditionally English city centre hotel, the vibe is a quiet, chilled out place to go and eat – and much much nicer than it looed before. It’s suitable for all ages, I’d even recommend it for a great place for a roast dinner with your gran! (Served every day!)
