Walking in to town at 4 o’clock ready for the start of Peterborough Christmas Lights switch on, really did feel a bit early and a bit different this year as it’s a Friday… anyway. Town’s already full of seller’s with their LED light display toys of Catherine wheels, sabres and this year some LED unicorn & circular balloons, (I’m sure my name is on one of these later on LOL).
Well there’s plenty to walk round although it be set over in different areas.. this year’s there’s a large fairground ride in front of St John’s church with lots of screaming going on. At the side of the Guildhall there were food stands selling hot chocolate, waffles, crepes and lollipops as well as Bratwurster sausages and other hot goodies for dinner. The main stage is where it’s all happening through the evening with live music, songs from Pantomime characters (The Key Theatre’s Peter Pan), the Stringlers pulling on some strings and ‘Sing!’ the public choir.. as well as Kev & Ross from sponsor Heart FM (joint sponsor).
Vodafone also got involved this year and have their own character running around with a Rocket on his back, plugging their super fast broadband coming soon… There’s buckets to be filled as the Mayor’s Charities are among the crowds too.
Venture into the Cathedral Precincts and there’s more delights with #ProseccoCocktails, hot mulled wine, marshmallow mountain chocolates, shawls, samosas and a climbing wall for the kids.
So, make sure you’ve got your woolly hat, gloves, scarf and an umbrellas as it’s drizzling and cold. Turning on the lights are the Mayor, Miss Peterborough, and other dignities. Before the countdown there was the fireworks to music setting off from the roof of Queensgate and then it’s 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and THAT TREE has been lit as well as all the other lights around Cathedral Square and Bridge Street.
