We popped in for a late lunch at Serpentine Green today, so I went in to see what the revamp of SubExpress was like and it wasn’t disappointing. There’s quite a lot of change to the decor with some fabulous Italian imagery around and I love the tiled wallpaper. The kitchen hasn’t changed much expected there’s some big pan for boiled water ready for that old Italian favourite – pasta.
I spoke to Peter, the owner, about why he’s made the changes when SubExpress was already a success. He said he was aiming at true Italian recipes like ragù (bolognese) and a traditional carbonara (no cream). There’s some lovely ingredients on the board and a lot of the recipes have been taken from his late mother. True fresh ingredients with an original Italian style, so don’t ask for Spaghetti Bolognese, as for the ragu (that’s what it is).
He’s catering for our coeliac eaters too with a choose of gluten free pastas too, and that’s because he’s coeliac too. It’s always good when someone understands the issue properly.
The Mamma Mia by Sub Xpress menu is a dream where you pick your pasta (gluten free too) then pick your sauce. So just take a good luck at the sauces as there’s a long list of delicious chooses and then select your pasta.
I had tagliatelle pasta with amatriciana sauce and it was HUGE, and delish! Husband got a taste of the mussels (not for me) neither bowl lasted long.
Give it a whirl and let us know what you think.
