Oh my gosh, can you actually believe that Queensgate has just turned 40 years old!!!!! I can’t, I know it feels a long time ago but 40 YEARS!
Do you remember the old buildings being demolished and Queensgate growing in its place. I know it must have happened but don’t recall much except going into this lovely new ‘indoor’ place for shopping. It was great to be able to be inside and not outside under the elements of our street shopping any more. There were fountains you could throw money in, also where the nativity scene used to be, places to sit and wait with your bags of shopping, have a sandwich or meet up. It was huge with so many more shops that we had in the town centre already. And the most impressive one was John Lewis a huge department store with fancy things to buy.
I remember C&A for your clothes (where New Look is now), Poppins a cafe (where Pandora is now), the Still pub was left intact and Westgate Arcade stayed too which was good. Habitat was upstairs in the corner where Primark is now, I remember Dixons or Curry’s being in there, Littlewoods catalogue shop, Argos was as new thing to us too – ordering from a catalogue in store and then collecting it. BHS was a big store in there too and do you remember those tall silver things with stripes in them that used to change colour….? Over the years Queensgate has changed considerably with style, the layout the same, but colours have changed, the fountains have gone and instead of a seating area we have those little bright coloured seats (not on my list of places to sit and eat comfortably).
Today they are starting the celebrations today with a display of back then and now images and you’ll find ‘Hundreds’ & ‘Thousands’ walking around as cake slices handing out cupcakes!!!! The festivities will carry through to Saturday when they will be having a Time travel disco – so you’ve got to dig out your brightly covered 80s jumpers and dance away to hits of the last 4 decades. There are some great prizes to win too!
