I spent Friday evening unexpectedly painting with my friend Kelly at an event by The Social Canvas at Yaxley Royal British Legion club.

Kelly’s friend was not able to make it, so I jumped in to take her place last minute.

We had to be there for 6.30pm so it was a rushed time after work to get some tea down me before hopping into the car to get there. Almost everyone had arrived so we made our war to the venue’s bar to grab some soft drinks. We then sat together and eagerly awaited the class to start.

You get a blank canvas, all the paints you need, some chalk and a couple of brushes with water. All  you need to do this is follow the instructions. There’s no right or wrong, it’s your painting, and to be fair, everyone comes away with something that will go on the wall.

We start with a quick ‘rough’ drawing to get some placement of areas for our Mc-Coo Highland cows and started with its nose. We were told what colours to mix in order to get the shades we wanted and continued to go through each part bit by bit. Nose, horns, eye and then the fun bit comes when you just swipe the paint anyway you want to create the hair. This done one tone at a time and the last part is actually thinking about what colours you want it to feature; blues, purples, yellow etc It’s entirely up to you.

It’s a nice relaxed (and stressed) couple of hours with around 18 other ladies and gents. It’s a nice feeling to come away with something that looks how the professionals make theirs. This particular class could have been a bit faster as we were running out of time and found ourselves rushing towards the end, which gets a little stressful. However everyone looked pleased with their masterpieces.

It’s called Sip & Paint, the price is around £30 which covers all your art supplies, you have to buy your own drinks. They do a range of different pics on different dates and there are a handful of other artists that do it around Peterborough too. So watch out for one near you, so you can get creative and have a colours evening.
