Day 7 of 30 Days In May Challenge: Jazz!
We have experienced the sounds of the world famous Roberto Pla Latin Ensemble. It was actually a lovely of something totally new, we’ve heard of the club and seen posters when passing the Great Northern Hotel but never been to it before…..this particular show was of fast-paced, toe-tapping South American infused music from their 12-piece band of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, Congo drums, flute, baritone saxophone, keyboard and drums – a mighty layered percussion section – with Roberto, himself, on timbales and featuring the voice of Nolita Golding.
The last, I believe, they played in Peterborough was around 20 years ago. They had promised a night of sizzling salsa and Latin infused rhythms and that’s definitely what we got. The band members were even dancing to the music too. It took the large audience, who were simply sitting back and enjoying what they were listening to, a while to get up and dance, but the audience eventually did. To be fair I hadn’t expected as many guests as there were in the room, I was pleasantly surprised with the audience filling the room.
Welcome to the ‘Boizot Lounge’ at Peterborough Theatre on Broadway….(renamed recently in honour of Peter Boizot from the Broadway Suite) we are being entertained by the Peterborough Jazz Club which has been running for over 25 years in Peterborough.
They bring the best, award-winning musicians, both national and international to the city. They aim to enhance your appreciation of great music by stimulating your interest in Jazz. If you’ve not been, you should try it at least once.
You’ll find their new home, the Boizot Lounge, on the side of the old Broadway. They held their first jazz concert in 1972 featuring the great Ronnie Scott Sextet which was a sell-out and gave the Club a great kick-start. Since 1992, there have been regular concerts each year formerly taking place at The Great Northern Hotel, Peterborough and now here. The jazz music promoted is mainly mainstream/modern but does cater for a wide range of interests as can be seen by looking down their past complete list of concerts on their website. The gigs take place in a large music room (capacity 200 and can be hired out for private functions) which has an excellent ambiance, together with an excellent sound system. Drinks are available at the bar with snacks available. The reputation of the club is based on its quality of events and by the size of their audience, it’s still going strong.
Their next concert is on June 2nd when we can look forward to a BIG BAND SPECIAL – The Andrew Linham Jazz Orchestra. Tickets are on the door: £14 or in advance at www.peterboroughjazzclub.co.uk
The club meets once a month to enjoy some special music. Their season runs until June when they have a summer break and it the recommences its programme in October.
