Well that was a very interesting visit out past Crowland yesterday to meet; Swampy, Diesel, Casper, Yogi, George, Dodger, Gizmo and Bear.
Louise joined our #LoveLocal discount card with a Meet & Greet offer, so I couldn’t resist going there to see what these furry friends were all about.
Situated on the family old farmland, Louise has created Flatlands Alpacas as an attraction. On entry (past the farmyard stuff) you’re instantly greeted by some raised curly-topped heads of different colours. 🦙🦙🦙
Carrots in hand these are very gentle creatures and love nibbling carrots. Hold them any way you want, there’s only one row of teeth in their mouths so you won’t get bitten. They also eat their pasture grass and hay. Once chewing it’s like watching a chipmunk with big cheeks. A very friendly bunch, some are happy to be patted on their necks of thick curly fleece and others aren’t bothered, but they will keep an eye on you for more nibbles. 😂
You can choose from a private vip 🌟 experience or join in as a group. (Use your discount card here) Both give you the chance to meet and greet the alpacas.
They’ve been open a while and started out with just three alpacas and now it’s a little herd of boys that are adorable. This interactive experience includes meeting and feeding or you can stay longer with either a picnic or an afternoon tea experience in her purpose built shepherd’s hut in the picnic paddock next door. A lovely decorated private space that you’ll just love with a range of picnic tables and a small play area for the kiddies.
Over in the other fields you may get to meet two Valais Black Nose sheep called Sheep and Sheepy… both looking cute with their white fleeces and black faces, friendly and they don’t mind a pat or two, just watch their pointed circular horns. Not forgetting their spritely chum Belle, the Anglo-Nubian goat, who comes when called and simply loves a fuss. 🥰
Tippy the white Cob horse, next door, is a delightful character with the strangest moustache you’ve ever seen! He loves kids and kids love him.
In Louise’s shop cabin you’ll find some Alpaca goodies you’ll want to have as a souvenir like her activity boxes – stand kit, felt sewing kit or wool boxes, gifts, trinkets for the kids, or maybe her own wool spun creations like ankle warmers.
Louise has started spinning wool and the feel of it is so soft compared to that of the sheep. She’s going to be looking at adding some workshops too, so keep an eye on her socials for more info. (You can also hire her space out for your own events)
One thing I did notice and took up was a Sponsorship. I purchased a silver package, chose Bear as my sponsored alpaca. It means I can come back for a couple of visits throughout the year, but the money goes towards feeding them. 🥕
The sun was shining, it was a glorious day with lots of information from Louise. The kids will certainly love these beautiful, quirky animals, but you will too.
