Day 21 of our 30 Days in May Challenge: Hollywood Bowl
Working all day and what better way to let off steam than to have a bowling evening. I phoned up their central reservations (you can also book online with some special online benefits) and booked a game for two for 6.20pm (£14.18) when I was also offered to book their VIP lane for an extra £1 each – retro style, special area, how could I refuse?! So, £16.18 it was. Shoes included if we needed them, but as long as you have flat, rubber-soled shoes like trainers, you’re fine.
It works out around £5.99 per game but when booking online there are various offers for you to grab for food and drinks like: Family – 2 adults & 2 kids burger & drink offer for £19.99, Beer for 4 £11.99, Bottle of Wine £14.00, Bottle of Prosecco £19.95, Pitcher of 4 beers £15.20 and even Jugs of Diet Coke £4.99.
Off we drove to the Bowling Alley in North Bretton where buses are also quite frequent for those without a car. We checked in at the welcome desk with just our name and we were put on the VIP Lane number 17. They’ve got 20 lanes in total. As you can see it’s very plush. It’s just basically a bit of extra dazzle to make your visit that little bit extra special. Plush red velvet curtains, comfy lounge seat, retro pool ball styled bowling balls, bright pink, green, yellow pins and the booth is kitted out in vintage 1950s memorabilia. It’s quite cool really and just adds to the evening. Also with the VIP you can call the staff to get you drinks or nibbles as you play so you don’t have to leave your lane and you can pop your bags in lane area too so there not hanging around.
So on with the game then……picking up a 10 ball I’m up first and you really do need to get into the swing of things like, not drop throw the ball, not chuck it in the gutter and basically aim to hit the pins! LOL. I’m not great but I did manage at least one strike and a couple of spares! I lost, 104 to 120, but thoroughly enjoyed the game. With two of you, the game lasts around 30 minutes, if there’s more of you in the group, it’s going to be a longer evening of play and fun.
There’s a complete entertainment area for you or the kids with lots of amusements games and arcade rides as well as 3 pool tables that you can find at the end of the Diner and for the summer there’s a beer garden outside.
After the game, we decided to have something to eat. If you’re thirsty you can grab a multitude of drinks from the bar: soft, hard and also milkshakes as well as grabbing a bottled drink from their drinks machine. Food can be ordered from the Diner where you can either eat there or eat on your lane. The menu is huge and not all fast-food: hot dogs where you can have a ‘naked’ dog and build your own with bacon, cheese, etc., burgers made from prime Aberdeen Angus beef, nacho sharers, salads and pasta, you can even do a Hollywood or California Combo sharer, ice-cream milkshakes, American desserts and a kids menu that starts at £4.39. We both opted for their Cobb Salad (butterfly chicken) and a portion of their fries. A really nice salad, much like a Caesar salad to be fair, nicely cooked and plentiful and under 600 calories (the salad not the chips LOL). If you want a coffee you can order a frothy Costa takeaway from the bar too.
Half-term is coming up and the staff advised that they do get really busy, so if you are thinking of having a game I suggest booking asap so you’re not disappointed – either go online and do it or ring their reservation, don’t just turn up.
If you’ve got a celebration coming up or you just want to have a ‘special’ game there is plenty of opportunity with their special packages: Teen’s Party Packages and Kid’s Parties starting at £10.49pp, Adult celebrations and corporate team building events start from £19.49pp.
