It’s a cold winter morning and we’re off for some car racing. What racing you say?

Let me tell you about this surprising good arena for you to enjoy by yourself, with friends, family and the kids. Not forgetting some good old fashioned ‘wanting to win’ motivation as a work’s team building exercise. And, you don’t need to have passed your driving license for to participate.

We went out into the countryside of Spalding to Low Fulney, where you find Spalding Scalextric. But this is no normal scalextric, this is a business offering you to race around famous tracks on a large scale!

My husband and I arrived promptly for opening at 11am on Saturday morning. It was bitterly cold, (and not much better inside so take something warm to wear) but the excitement of walking in the door and seeing the set up, really warmed us up. We signed in, paid £12 per person, and got ready for our instructions.

First up on table 1 was the Australian track: Sydney Motorsport Park, which meant that we were in for a twisty beginning, EEk, and I’ve not used a scalextric for at least 25 years! Here goes! Full instructions on how to press, when to brake, what’s best for what car, were given. There are 4 cars on each track and you stay with your colour all the way round so it gives you a good experience. By the way, it’s not £12 for one track, you get 8 minutes on each of the tracks in the arena and there’s 7 tracks in all.

Off we go and it’s Steady Eddy for me round the circuit as I get used to a handheld mobile controller, as my husband goes full throttle, not fully happy at getting a blue car as he wanted Ferrari Red! LOL. Me? Mellow yellow will do me fine!  It doesn’t take long to get used to what you’re doing and even slow little old me crossed the finishing line second with 35 laps against 39. On to the second table…

Up at table 2 and it’s the Redbull Ring, Austria. It’s a simpler track, not too much twisting and we get up to speed on this one, whizzing our hearts out round the corners and really going for it. I managed to keep my cool and win this one, with a steady speed around the track with 46 laps to 40. Whoop Whoop. On to the third…

Table 3 is the French track Dijon-Prenois. Again not too bad on the curves and a steady race to be had by both. Track 4 is mental – you now get thrown back into using ‘wired’ controllers – you know those things that attach to the track, we’ve been spoilt! This track is twisting and turning like a snake, we’re racing around Silverstone. Seriously? These turns are enough to put you in a spin and you’ll be adding to your steps as you constantly put your car back on the tracks from cornering at speed, but you just can’t help it, you want to win! On to table 5…

Another wired controller track and we’re adding less steps for crashes due to the simpler track layout of Knockhill Racing Circuit in Scotland. It’s gentler but you still get that urge to fly down the straights before an annoying bend. lol. On to table 6 …

Snetterton 200 in England gives you back the easiness of the mobile controller which are brilliant for moving into your ideal position for vision around the track. Again it’s a nice easy going circuit where you can really put your foot down on the straights. On to table 7…

We hadn’t noticed this one when we came in, as you just glance around, but this has to be the favourite. It’s a BIG one too. It’s Donnington Park, England, and what’s nice is that it even has the famous Dunlop archway. I’ve actually been here years ago taking photographs, so looked sort of familiar. It’s a great track to whiz up and down. Do I care if I win at this point, no, I’m just enjoying playing. (sorry racing) A couple of crashes off on the turns, but it’s a lovely one to complete. On to the final table…

Table 8 is another fairly long track as it’s Cadwell Park, England. Straights, curves and a few wriggles in this circuit. We’ve been keeping score as we go along, but not really taken any notice, so not idea where I am with points, but I’ll just aim to stay on track. Well, I tried to….. both my husband and I had black spots on the track where we constantly came off, possibly due to too much speed as secretly I wanted to win and obviously he wanted to as well.

The timer goes off telling us our last 8 minutes is up so we sit down in the cafe area to finalise our scores. I don’t get on the 1st placed podium, my husband does, but scores don’t the doors were 301 vs 298 so I’m content with that.

The whole place is kitted for fun with a large cafe / waiting area, a toilet (baby changing too), and on reception there are racks for cars if you’d like to purchase any as well as track pieces. If you’re an avid racer you can bring your own car if you don’t want to play their supplied vehicles.

***** 5 star review (just need to turn the heating up) brrrrrr
I thoroughly enjoyed myself and will certainly be bringing some friends along to race in a group in the summertime. We both agreed that the value for money was great as we played 8 minutes on 8 tracks and there wasn’t too much squabbling! LOL . Fabulous.

If you’re revving to go and want to either do a family event, keep the kids out of mischief, do a team build or simply go take a look – find out more at https://scalextric-racing.co.uk/
